The first shipyards in Port Glasgow were erected in the late 1700s. Wood obtained throughout the world was temporarily stored on the Clyde in vast Timber Ponds. The last remains of ‘the stabs’ as they are known locally are visible from Kelburn Park to the West of Port Glasgow
