Foot of Knowledge

EdinburghSculptor Alexander Stoddart's statue of the philosopher David Hume was erected in 1995. The 'golden toe' is as a result of people rubbing the toe hoping to receive luck. This is a humorous nod to Hume's philosophy of the relationship between cause and effect where doing one thing cannot lead to the outcome of another unrelated thing.
