NT Art Month
Galleries prepare for the inaugural NT Art Month running throughout Edinburgh’s New Town this June. NT Art Month is a brand new month-long celebration of the arts quarter in Edinburgh’s New Town, which will run at 14 venues from 8 June to 30 June 2023.

When the Apple Ripens: Peter Howson at 65
A major retrospective of one of the UK’s leading figurative painters, Peter Howson, opens at Edinburgh’s City Art Centre on 27 May until 1 October 2023. The exhibition will unite around 100 works spanning the artist’s career, many never seen before in Scotland.
ECA Performance Costume Show
Magical costumes inspired by The Wombles, the film Chicken Run and a Stephen King novel are among the creations being showcased by Edinburgh College of Art students. The outfits and performers will command centre stage at a theatrical show at the Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh, on 26 May, revealing the creations of students studying Performance Costume.
RSA Exhibition 2023
Now in its 197th year, the RSA Annual Exhibition provides a platform for contemporary painting, sculpture, film, printmaking, photography and installation, alongside work by some of the country’s leading architects. The exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy Galleries in Edinburgh runs from 6 May - 11 June 2023.
Kaffe Fassett - The Power of Pattern
Kaffe Fassett: The Power of Pattern at Dovecot Studios will open to the public Friday 31st March. Running until Saturday 8th July 2023, the exhibition is curated by textile guru Kaffe Fassett and Dennis Nothdruft from the Fashion and Textile Museum. Including over 70 colourful, eclectic pieces, this exhibition draws on artworks from invited international makers inspired by Kaffe Fassett, as well as quilts, cushions, clothes and archival material.
Edinburgh International Children’s Festival launch
The Edinburgh International Children’s Festival launches with school children staging a protest in the playground of Forthview Primary School brandishing posters featuring the festival image as well as slogans referencing the UNCRC (UN Convention on the Rights of the Child).
New Contemporaries
Now in its 14th year, the RSA New Contemporaries exhibition offers a unique opportunity to see some of the best-emerging talent in Scotland under one roof. Showcasing 57 graduates selected from the 2021 degree shows, the exhibition features a diverse array of painting, sculpture, film-making, photography, printmaking, installation, performance and architecture.
Edinburgh Chinese New Year Launch
Organisers of Edinburgh’s Chinese New Year Festival announce a full programme of events and activities across the city to celebrate Chinese New Year and the start of The Year of the Rabbit. The programme, which includes the Official Chinese New Year Concert, a performance of Mulan, a bilingual Ceilidh and a fabulous light show at Edinburgh Castle, also offers online calligraphy, music and Tai Chi workshops and runs from Friday 20 January to Friday, 3 February 2023
Into the Distance
The Royal Scottish Academy presents new work from the 2020 and 2021 RSA Barns-Graham Travel Award winners Natasha Jensen and Paige Silverman, alongside sharing current work by past winners and tracing the development of their practice in the intervening years. Alongside is an exhibition of the work of William Littlejohn, In New Light. The exhibitions take place at the RSA in Edinburgh from 14 January until 1 March 2023.
